Henryetta Honors the Fallen: Memorial Day Service Set for May 26, 2025

Memorial Day

Henryetta, OK — On Monday, May 26, 2025, VFW Post 539 will continue its longstanding tradition of honoring America’s fallen heroes with a heartfelt Memorial Day ceremony at Westlawn Cemetery. For more than a century, the Henryetta community has gathered to remember those who gave their lives in defense of our nation. This year’s program promises to be a moving tribute steeped in tradition, music, and reverence.

Ceremony Highlights

The 2025 program will include:

  • Breanna Bevenue Clark performing the National Anthem and “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”

  • Tricia Bear of the VFW Auxiliary reading “The Soldier’s Prayer.”

  • A commemorative address by Commander Bill Goodner, reflecting on the sacrifices of servicemen and women across generations.

  • Kent Pharoah will provide stirring renditions of “Taps” and “Danny Boy” on the bagpipes, a solemn and powerful moment in the program.

Continuing a Legacy of Service

Each year, on the Saturday before Memorial Day, VFW Post 539 members, Auxiliary members, and dedicated local volunteers place over 2,800 American flags on veterans’ graves across 12 cemeteries in the Henryetta area. This year’s flag-placing will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2025—a unifying moment of community remembrance that sets the tone for the holiday weekend.

A Rich Local History of Honor

Henryetta’s Memorial Day traditions stretch back generations. VFW Post 539, established in 1921, is one of Oklahoma’s oldest posts. The “Spirit of the American Doughboy” statue, erected on July 4, 1925 at the corner of Sixth and Main, continues to serve as a public reminder of the local sons lost in World War I and later conflicts. In recent years, Memorial Day ceremonies have grown to include participation from the Mayor, city officials, and fellow veterans’ organizations such as American Legion Post 85, showcasing the city’s unwavering support for its service members.

All Are Welcome

The public is warmly invited to attend the 2025 Memorial Day Program at Westlawn Cemetery. It’s a chance for the Henryetta community to come together in a shared expression of gratitude, unity, and respect.
