Edmond Invests Heavily in Water Infrastructure as Growth Continues
Edmond continues to balance rapid residential and commercial growth with the infrastructure needed to support it. The most visible recent commitment is a $377 million investment in the city’s water treatment capacity — a project city leaders say is essential for long-term quality of life.
Major Water Treatment Plant Upgrade Approved
In June, the Edmond City Council unanimously approved a $377.2 million contract for the final phase of improvements at the Arcadia Lake Water Treatment Plant. The work will replace aging facilities and increase treatment capacity from 12 million gallons per day to 30 million gallons per day.
City officials have described the existing plant as having reached the end of its useful life. The expanded capacity is designed to meet projected demand for decades while maintaining high water quality standards for residents and businesses. The project is part of Edmond’s broader Water System Master Plan and represents one of the largest single infrastructure investments in the city’s recent history.
Growth Brings Temporary Traffic Adjustments
Development activity is also visible in the city’s road network. Beginning July 20, periodic lane closures started on northbound Sooner Road between Coffee Creek Road and Sorghum Mill Road to accommodate a new neighborhood entrance for the Promontory Ridge residential development.
Separately, three railroad crossings — Main Street, 3rd Street, and 5th Street — closed beginning July 21 for approximately two weeks while BNSF Railway performs track and crossing maintenance. City staff have urged drivers to plan alternate routes during the work and have posted updates on the city’s interactive lane-closure map.
Community Investment Beyond Infrastructure
Alongside major capital projects, Edmond continues to support quality-of-life initiatives. The city recently allocated funding to local nonprofits through its Community Agency Review Commission process and provided additional support for the Edmond History Museum and LibertyFest.
These investments reflect a consistent approach: grow responsibly, maintain strong public services, and preserve the community character that has made Edmond one of the most desirable cities in the Oklahoma City metro area. Residents and business owners note that while construction and temporary traffic changes can be inconvenient, the underlying investments are aimed at ensuring Edmond remains a livable, well-served community as it continues to expand.
